History and Personality:

At one point in the series, Nako informs her friend that she began working at the inn to gain more confidence; she still has a long way to go on that journey. Nako’s most obvious trait is that she’s incredibly, painfully timid. She even claims that her new coworker Ohana frightens her because of her loud voice and energy—even when Ohana has been nothing but friendly to her. When giving the new employee a tour of the inn, she’s far from the ideal guide: she’s so frightened by the interaction that her answers are short and noncommittal. Even when she knows the answer to a question customers ask, she falters and eventually has to write them a note. This and her frequent dismissal of her skills and interests—like rescinding her offer to teach Ohana to swim because it’s useless—suggest that her shyness works hand in hand with her insecurity and lack of confidence.

In fact, Nako’s so insecure in herself that she takes getting a raise at work as a message that she has to change herself and be louder. After her first mistake, she complains to the manager that she doesn’t deserve the extra pay.

She tends to flee rather than confront people. When being harassed by “survival gamers” staying at the inn, Nako hides behind her fellow waitresses or simply bolts away, faster than she’s ever moved in her life. She does the same when hit on while hanging out with her friends. Her discomfort with human interaction is nicely summed up when she daydreams of being a mermaid—and of leaving a drowning prince to die.

As expected of the older sister, Nako has a responsible streak. After working, she returns home to cook for her siblings and essentially run the house. She also tends to save her pay, having few hobbies. At restaurants, she eats the leftovers of her siblings. Even then, she can dream like any teenager. When a movie comes to shoot at the inn, she dreams of the roles she can play. At the encouragement of her friends, she tries to step out of her shell and spring for some new clothes.

Nako undergoes something of a transformation when she’s with her family. The oldest of four siblings, she assumes command while her parents bicker over childrearing techniques. She thinks of her home as her element, while she’s a fish out of water in the rest of the world. At home, she can raise her voice and scold her parents or give orders to her younger siblings easily.

Some of that assertiveness carries over when it comes to caring for those even outside her family. Nako finds it within herself to shove Ohana back to bed when her friend insists on working despite a fever. Even as she cringes throughout the whole thing, she manages to rebuke her friend Minko for shouting at Ohana. When it counts, she can even show unexpected bravery, most notably when she dives off a high cliff to save a drowning man. She tries to minimize this to others, another manifestation of her shyness.

As kind as she is herself, she’s also easily swayed by even the smallest acts of kindness. After Ohana’s mother compliments her eyes, Nako insists that the woman is “wonderful” even as she continues causing trouble for the other employees.

First Person/Action brackets:

(This will be done in brackets and can be a video or audio post that you would make on the main community.)

U-um… Hello?

[There’s the sound of someone tapping the receiver, then Nako clears her throat.]

I’m sorry… I just wanted to say, that, um.

[Come on, Nako, you can do this! She sucks in a deep breath and her soft-spoken tone vanishes as she tries to force out the words. She may be overcompensating just a little and her volume gradually drops as she quickly runs out of steam.]

I-I don’t have many skills that would help here… I’m sure especially not compared to most of you! But I want to help with the library however I can. I worked at an inn back home, so I can clean, at least…

So… Please tell me how I can help. Thank you for listening. Sorry.

[She cringes as she hangs up, thankful that at least she didn’t use video.]
